Over and Out
A very sad ending to a great effort as the 30 meter Groupama flipped over
and is broken up approximately 80 miles off New Zealand while attempting a
Jules Verne around the world record. At 0.43 this morning, Franck Cammas,
skipper of maxi-trimaran Groupama 3, told his shore team. “We have just
capsized. The windward float broke in two, causing the two arms to break
and then the boat went over on its side. The crew is safe and inside the
central hull. No one is hurt. There are 5 to 7 metre waves and 25 to 30
knots of wind. The sea is breaking and nobody can go outside.”
We do know all 10 of the crew are now okay, having been winched off the
upturned tri via helicopter rescue. It had been blowing good - 35 knots
with up to seven meter seas, but further details about how the flip and
damage happened are not yet known. What a bummer. Follow the thread which
tracked this story from the beginning. Thanks to Marian Martin/BYM News
for the cammas quote. Chilling.

French yacht crew winched to safety
Ten sailors whose yacht overturned 80 nautical miles (145km) east of
Dunedin today have been winched to safety by three rescue helicopters and
are en route to Dunedin.
Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) facilitated the rescue
response after its equivalent in France called at 1.20pm (NZDT) to report
it had picked up a signal from the vessel’s 406Mhz Emergency Position
indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).
RCCNZ was able to speak to the crew via satellite phone and confirm that
all on board the French trimaran Groupama III are uninjured. All were
dressed in survival gear when they were picked up form the yacht’s hull.
The yacht was taking part in the Jules Verne Round the World Yacht Race
when it overturned.
Weather in the area consists of 2m swells and south-westerly winds of 30
knots.
More information will be made available as and when it becomes available.
